"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything" - Plato
music curriculum intent
At Scholes Village Primary School we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. It is our intention that our children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of styles, traditions, and musical genres. We aim to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may play in people’s lives. We are committed to ensuring all children: have the experience of learning to play an instrument; understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music in a variety of different contexts.

Thursday 23rd February - Mrs Sunderland Music Festival - This morning 25 members of our school choir took part in the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival Workshop at Huddersfield Town Hall. They were joined by many other schools from around Kirklees to rehearse songs that we have been practising in choir club since Christmas, accompanied by the Musica Kirklees Youth Orchestra. The children learned more about the inter-related dimensions of music and how they can be used to improve the quality of their singing and composing. Most of the children returned for the evening performance where they performed to a packed out audience in the magnificent environs of the Town Hall. It is the first time in the history of the Festival that tickets have sold out - and I think all who attended will agree that it was an amazing performance. All the children behaved impeccably and sang their hearts out!
Thursday 2nd February - Class 4 and 5 Singing Workshops from Bradford Cathedral Music Department - This afternoon, all children in Class 4 and Class 5 took part in a singing workshop provided by Dr Ed Jones from Bradford Cathedral. They learned how to develop their singing technique and practised singing some new songs together as a group. They also all received a 'golden ticket', inviting them to attend Bradford Cathedral's 'Cathedral Sing!' event on the 25th February. 'Cathedral Sing!' is an open event hosted by Bradford Cathedral, where children and their parents from across Bradford and the surrounding area are invited to participate in singin workshops and find out more about singing with the Cathedral's choirs. It is open to all children from Year 2 to Year 5. If you would like to take your child along you can find out more by visiting the Bradford Cathedral website at www.bradfordcathedral.org.uk.
Friday 16th December - Whole School Orchestra Experience from Musica Kirklees Staff Orchestra - The whole school was treated to a recital by the Musica Kirklees Staff Orchestra in the school hall. They performed several songs from a variety of genres, including a colourful interactive version of Papageno's Song from the Magic Flute by Mozart, and "You'll Be Back" from the West End muscial, "Hamilton". Children were introduced to the instruments of the orchestra and learned how they were played, how they sounded, and how they were grouped together. The performance was completed with a special rendition of "Merry Christmas Everyone" featuring the Scholes Village Primary School Staff!
Monday 12th December - School Choir Carol Singing at Tesco's, Cleckheaton - Representatives from the school choir sang carols for an hour in the foyer at Tesco's and managed to raise an amazing £135.94 towards paying for the coaches to take them to the Mrs Sunderland Festival in February.
Thursday 8th December - Christmas Celebration in Church - Years 1 to 6 performed songs from their Christmas Productions in St Philip and St James Church, while the choir sang two of their favourite carols - "Away in a Manger" and "Ding Dong Merrily on High". Wednesday 7th December - School Choir Carol Singing with the PTA round the log cabin - The school choir had been invited to lead some carol singing to accompany the PTA awareness event at the log cabin after school. While the PTA served up hot chocolate, the choir sang old favourites such as 'Deck the Halls' and 'Silent Night' to raise money to pay for coaches to take them to the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival in February,
Friday 11th November - Remembrance Event in the School Playground - The children learned "We Will Remember" to sing for parents and friends who were invited to join us for a Remembrance Day event in the school playground.
