music

music curriculum intent
At Scholes Village Primary School we make music an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. It is our intention that our children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of styles, traditions, and musical genres. We aim to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and an unbiased respect for the role that music may play in people’s lives. We are committed to ensuring all children: have the experience of learning to play an instrument; understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music in a variety of different contexts.

implementation
The music curriculum, provided by Charanga from EYFS to Year 6, ensures that pupils: sing, listen, compose, play, perform and evaluate. These skills are embedded in classroom activities, as well as weekly singing sessions, various performances and the learning of instruments (via individual peripatetic music teacher lessons or as a class in Year 5). We also have regular visitors to the school who broaden and deepen the pupils’ musical experiences and engage the pupils in practical activities that challenge their perspectives of musical genres and traditions.

impact
The integral nature of music provides an enormously rich palette from which a pupil may access fundamental abilities such as: achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others, and self-reflection. Music can also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to pupils individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Children are able to enjoy music, in as many ways as they choose - either as listener, creator or performer. They can dissect music and comprehend its parts. They can sing and feel a pulse. They will retain knowledge that is pertinent to music and will have the opportunity to foster their instrumental flare and use this as a form of expression. All children benefit from learning to play an instrument.
