"We are not the makers of history. We are made by history." - Martin Luther King Jr.
Our History scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to be curious and creative thinkers, who develop a complex knowledge of local and national history and the history of the wider world. We want pupils to develop the confidence to think critically, ask questions, and be able to explain and analyse historical evidence. They will gain a greater understanding of their own world through being introduced to the events and personalities of the past.

Our curriculum has a balance between developing enquiry skills and acquiring important historical knowledge. The days of school children rote learning kings and queens, dates and events are indeed a thing of the past! Our teaching equips pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh up evidence and develop perspective and judgement.
In Key Stage One, children begin to develop an awareness of the past and the ways in which it is similar to and different from the present. We begin with a study in Year 1 into change in their own lives through their own development and personal history. Throughout the Key Stage, children learn about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements, and events beyond living memory that are significant. Through these activities children leave Key Stage 1 with an awareness of what History is about and how our lives are shaped today by the actions of people in the past, for better or for worse!
In Key Stage Two, children develop a chronological knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history. Teaching of this content is approached as a combination of overview and in-depth studies. We ensure pupils understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed.
