Above all, we aim to teach lessons that will inspire pupils’ curiosity to learn about the past.  Our staff at Scholes rise to the challenge of making the study of history stimulating, exciting and intellectually demanding. 

Our curriculum has a balance between developing enquiry skills and acquiring important historical knowledge, and an emphasis on developing critical analysis. The days of school children rote learning kings and queens, dates and events are indeed a thing of the past!  Our teaching equips pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh up evidence and develop perspective and judgement. 

 

In Key Stage One, children begin to develop an awareness of the past and the ways in which it is similar to and different from the present. We begin with a study in Year 1 into change in their own lives through their own development, and personal history.  Throughout the Key Stage, children learn about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements, and events beyond living memory that are significant.  Through these activities children leave Key Stage 1 with an awareness of what History is about and how our lives are shaped today by the actions of people in the past, for better or for worse!

 

In Key Stage Two, children develop a chronological knowledge and understanding of British, local and world history.  Within this Key Stage we study the entire history of pre-1066 Britain in 6 British History projects, alongside an early civilisation study (Ancient Egypt), a study of Ancient Greece and a non-European study (the Mayan civilisation).  Teaching of this content is approached as a combination of overview and in-depth studies.  We ensure pupils understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed.
